CIFAS figures reveal increase in identity fraud 11 May 2010

New figures from CIFAS, the UK’s Fraud Prevention Service, reveal a 19.86% increase in identity fraud when compared with the same period in 2009. The number of victims of impersonation also increased by over 20% compared with the first quarter of 2009. 27,000 victims of impersonation were recorded by CIFAS Members during the first three months of 2010: an increase of just over 6,000. National Fraud Reporting Centre – Launch of Action Fraud Website 1 February 2010

Individuals or business operators who have been a victim of fraud in the last 12 months and want to report it, are encouraged to contact Action Fraud through their newly launched website www.actionfraud.org.uk . Action Fraud can be contacted on 0300 123 2040 or Textphone 0300 123 2050. An on-line reporting tool will be added soon.
